WATER RESOURCES

The Water resources area includes studies, planning and management of surface and underground water resources in river basins, as well as environmental studies and management plans. ENGECORPS has extensive experience in drafting water safety studies and basin plans, structuring management instruments (granting, georeferenced information systems, collection systems, etc.), modeling of River Basin Agencies, vulnerability of aquifers, analyzes of qualitative and quantitative availability, water balances and operational rules of reservoirs.

National Water Security Plan

National Water Agency – ANA

Executed in an original and innovative manner, the National Water Security Plan consists of an executive instrument for federal governmental decision-making. From the guidelines and criteria originated from the concept of Water Security, the National Water Security Plan assures that Brazil has an integrated and consistent planning of water infrastructure with strategic nature and regional relevance, until the year of 2035, for reduction of droughts and floods impacts. Besides works, there are additional studies and projects necessary for feasibility, as well as specific actions proposed to resolve knowledge deficiencies in low water security areas.

Water Resources Plan of Rio Grande River Basin

National Water Agency - ANA

Rio Grande River Basin is located in the Southeast Region of Brazil and has a surface area of over 143 thousand km², with nearly 9 million inhabitants within 393 municipalities, 325 of which with an area totally located in the basin. The Water Resources Plan of Rio Grande River Basin focuses on implementing the management instruments of water resources in the basin, aiming to foment multiple, rational and sustainable use of water, including the grant, charge and insertion into classes of major uses and information system, besides the preparation of an Operation Manual, which defines the practical and systematic procedures for effectively implementing those instruments. The Plan includes identification of critical areas; reasons of conflicts; and definition of the future situation of water resources from the structure of scenarios of quantity-quality demands of water resources focused on water sustainability and gradual improvement of the basin environmental quality.

Critical Event Forecast System

National Water Agency - ANA

Conception of the Critical Event Forecast System in the Paraíba do Sul River Basin and the Structural Interventions System for Mitigation of the Flood Effects on the Muriaé and Pomba Rivers Basins, consisting of two stages: a) Conception of the Critical Event Forecast System including the elaboration of a Management Plan for the quantity and quality of water in the event of accidental episodes of flooding and contamination in the Paraíba do Sul river basin. The study covered 1,800 km of river course and 55,000 km² of river basin comprised between the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo; b) Conception of the System of Structural Interventions, SISPREC - Computational System for presentation, analysis and visualization of the information generated by the models developed during the elaboration of the studies.

Urucuia Water System

National Water Agency - ANA

Studies of Natural Vulnerability to Contamination and Protection Strategies in the Outcrop Areas of the Guarani - SAG Water System, with a view to the development of shared mechanisms of groundwater management. The SAG has an extension of 1,087,879.15 km², of which 87,401 km² are found in Brazil. The objective of the studies, contracted by the National Water Agency - ANA, was to execute a regional assessment of the natural vulnerability of the SAG to the contamination, as well as to define the danger of contamination, establishing a technical basis for the planning of the actions and protection measures and control of groundwater, constituting a reference to support the decision for the management boards.

Operational Rules for 204 Reservoirs

National Water Agency - ANA

Refinement of the Water Balance and Establishment of Operational Rules for 204 Reservoirs located in the Brazilian Semi-Arid, at the initiative of the National Water Agency (ANA), including the definition of guidelines, methodologies and tools to support the establishment of operational rules, including water supply estimates and associated demands, database creation and application of support and decision tool. The total population of the semi-arid region in 2010 was about 22.6 million people, 62% of them living in urban areas and 38% in rural areas. The definition of the operating rules aims to provide subsidies for a greater rationality in the decision processes related to the allocation of water and the level of risk accepted by users and water resources management boards.
